How do I register to become a depositing customer of RRL?
- Local (South Africa) and International (outside of South Africa) Depositing
- RRL is a gold and silver refiner only and does not accept any Platinum Group Metals-based materials
- The registration process would depend on the type of customer requirements.
- RRL will only contemplate refining and smelting transactions with clients from countries which do not appear on the United Nations ‘unfavourable’ listing
- RRL only transacts on a principal-to-principal basis and does not transact through intermediaries
- RRL will only be interested in an agreement with the OWNER of the gold and no intermediaries (Principal-to-principal). The owner of the gold must have a registered company (an individual cannot register in a private capacity). Only if the above parameters are met; and you wish to gain a bit more information with regard to the material to be deposited, RRL will require the below information, which can be sent to RRL’s Sourcing Manager (click here for details)
- The refining/smelting fees will be based on the material type, gold/silver content and volume of material deposited
- Full detail relating to the source of material to be deposited (location and country)
- Full detail relating to the funding in relation to the acquirement of material to be deposited.
- Type of material (e.g. gold bullion, alluvial gold, electronic scrap, borax slags, flue/fan dust etc.)
- Expected assays/contents for all elements or compounds (full chemical analysis preferred, but if they don’t have that then an estimate on the gold and silver assay.)
- Possible presence of hazardous elements (eg. Mercury, Arsenic, Cadmium etc. etc.)
- Average size of shipments (and expected annual volume).
- Frequency of shipments
- The potential depositing customer must be in possession of valid and current applicable permits to handle and move precious metals

How do I register to become a purchasing customer of RRL?

- I have an international client who would like to buy gold and/or silver
- RRL only transacts on a principal-to-principal basis and does not transact through intermediaries.
- RRL can assist with specific products relevant to the jewellery and dental manufacturing industry; such as granules, plate, wire, solder paste etc.
- In regard to gold bullion bars, RRL is not in a position to supply as we act as agent for selected gold producers in the refining, marketing and sale of their gold production. In so doing, we have liaison arrangements with Members of the London Bullion Market Association
(LBMA) for the sale and distribution of their products
- Should RRL not be in a position to assist with your needs, please contact any of the above Members on www.lbma.org
- I would like to buy gold locally
(visit Retail Sales for a pricing list which is updated daily).
- RRL will only transact with a registered company (an individual cannot register in a private capacity), who is in possession of a valid Jewellers’ Permit/Works Recovery license.
- Orders of 50gms and less will be levied with an administration fee of R250.00
- Before new customers can purchase from our retail range of value-added products, an Application to Trade form is to be completed and returned with the relevant documents for security screening. This application for can be requested from our CRM (see Contact Us for details):
- I would like to buy silver locally
- RRL’s does not carry large stock of silver, as our obligation to fulfil international orders is first priority
- It is no longer regulation to be in possession of a precious metals permit for the purchase of silver, but RRL requires you to be a registered company (an individual cannot register in a private capacity).

I would like to buy Krugerrand coins.
- Krugerrands will only be made available for purchase to registered manufacturing jewellers for the use in the process of manufacturing jewellery pieces and to members of the South African Association of Numismatic Dealers (SAAND).
- RRL distributes its Krugerrand range of coins through authorised and approved coin dealers. Click here to access the contact details of most frequently traded local coin dealers on this web site.
- The price for Krugerrands is based on the gold content of the coin, plus a small premium to cover manufacturing and distribution costs
- Krugerrands are not subject to VAT due its legal tender status.
- Any new customer would be required to complete RRL’s Application to trade form for approval to transact with RRL. This application form can be requested from our CRM (see Contact Us for details):
- Krugerrand coins can be purchased internationally through the primary distributors in Germany, United Kingdom and United States of America.

My child has a school project on gold. Does RRL have literature on the process of gold and the history thereof?
- Depending on the nature of the project, there is a wide variety of material available on this site. Information on the mining industry generally can also be found on the website of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa and those of our shareholders – click here for links to other relevant websites.
Does the Krugerrand have a face value?
- No the Krugerrand does not have a face value. The value of the coin is based on the fine gold content as priced twice daily on the London market.
I am visiting South Africa and would like to buy a gold bar or Krugerrand. Can I take this out of the country – what is the procedure?
- Krugerrands are available at a variety of Coin Dealers in South Africa (click here for a list of coin dealers, brokers and stockists) and can be purchased and taken out of the country without any problems.
- Gold bars are categorised as unwrought gold under the South African Precious Metals Act (visit www.dme.gov.za for more info on this legislation) and can therefore not be purchased in South Africa.
Does RRL buy/sell platinum group metals (PGMs)?
- No, RRL is a gold and silver refinery. You would need to contact Impala Refining Services for info on PGMs.
What are the different payment options accepted by Rand Refinery?
Rand Refinery Limited is required to adequately apply FICA requirements throughout all its transactions, especially as this relates to the potential of money laundering using precious metals as a conduit. As a result:
- no cash, credit cards, cheques or bank guaranteed cheques will be accepted.
- no cash deposits directly placed into our account will be accepted, only inter account transfers.
- only Electronic Fund Transfers (EFT’s) into our account will be accepted as payment.
Does RRL give discounts?
- No, RRL does not give any discounts.
Does RRL have a storage facility for coins and/or bars?
- At the moment, it does not cater for storage facility for coins.
Can I tour the RRL facility?
- Due to the high value of the product refined at RRL, access is restricted to existing customers, potential new customers and VIP government officials.
Does RRL supply replica gold bars?
- RRL can arrange for a quotation through its supplier (or the customer can contact Gold Reef City Mint (GRCM) directly, if they require a non-RRL specific bar – (www.goldreefcity.co.za)
As a depositing customer, can I view my material assay results on the website?
- Yes, this is possible. To have this facility activated, you need to contact our Webmaster, webmaster@gold.co.za who will take you through the registration procedure.
