 Rand Refinery is the world’s largest single-site refining and smelting complex for a variety of precious metal products. Our business does, however, extend beyond refining and smelting to include a comprehensive range of precious metals management services to the mining and jewellery industries both locally and globally. Aside from our logistics, vault, treasury, smelting and refining services, we offer an array of value-added products including cast and minted bars, coin blanks and various semi-fabricated items for the jewellery manufacturing industry.
Rand Refinery has also been responsible for manufacturing, marketing and delivering in excess of 54 million bullion Krugerrand coins - representing over 46 million ounces of gold in various denominations - since the coin was launched in 1967. We have also processed more than 40 000 tons of gold since our establishment, more than one third of the gold ever mined world-wide.
Rand Refinery Limited acts as agent for selected gold producers in the refining, marketing and sale of their gold production. In so doing, we have liaison arrangements with Members of the LBMA in London for the sale and distribution of gold refined by Rand Refinery into Value Added Products.
We currently employ 350 people at our office and production facility in Germiston, east of Johannesburg in South Africa.

South Africa's gold-bearing Witwatersrand Reefs constitute the largest known deposit of gold in the world. It was here that the great mining houses were born and where Rand Refinery was established in 1920.
A year later, Rand Refinery was awarded London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Good Delivery status – the world’s foremost standard of quality for gold and silver bars. With our reputation for quality, reliability and integrity, we have maintained that status and count ourselves among 56 other refineries worldwide that currently appear on the Good Delivery list. Our products are also accredited on New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) and the Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM). In March 2005, Rand Refinery was the first refinery to receive ‘Dubai Good Delivery Status’ as awarded by the Dubai Metals and Commodity Centre (DMCC).

In 2004, our status as one of the world’s premier refiners of precious metals was further consolidated through our appointment by the LBMA as one of only five LBMA-approved Good Delivery referees. As a referee, we are responsible for the pro-active monitoring of performance requirements in the weighing, melting, sampling and assaying of gold and/or silver on behalf of other Good Delivery refiners.
In our nearly 90-year existence, the company’s focus has evolved from one whose core competency was refining and smelting to also include a greater emphasis on beneficiation. In the gold sector, beneficiation of product refers to the addition of value to gold beyond the price at which gold is traded internationally. Typically, beneficiation may encompass producing semi-fabricated gold products for use by the jewellery manufacturing trade to the use of gold in industrial applications.
Our focus has also extended beyond South Africa’s borders to include international markets. Rand Refinery now processes gold doré and gold-bearing by-products from west, east and southern Africa, North America and the Far East. In 2005 alone, 40% of the doré processed at Rand Refinery was sourced outside South African borders and 80% of Africa’s gold production (excluding SA) was refined at Rand Refinery.
